If you are planning a site visit to Dholera, the first questions are usually how far it is from Ahmedabad and how long the drive takes. In October 2026 the honest answer has two parts. The distance is roughly 80 to 100 km, depending on where you start in Ahmedabad and which part of Dholera you are heading to. The travel time has changed far more than the distance. Since the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway was inaugurated on 31 March 2026, reported drive times have fallen from over two hours to roughly 45 minutes to an hour. This guide explains the numbers, the routes, the practical details and what a shorter journey means for anyone looking at land in the region.

Dholera to Ahmedabad Distance: Why You See Different Numbers

Search results quote different figures for the same journey. Most of the confusion comes from three things.

  • The starting point. Ahmedabad is a large city. Sarkhej on the Sardar Patel Ring Road, SG Highway and the old city are at different distances from the start of the expressway.
  • The destination. Dholera SIR covers about 920 sq km across 22 villages. The Activation Area, the airport side and a village outside the SIR boundary are not the same distance from Ahmedabad.
  • The route. The older road through Bavla and Dhandhuka is longer than the expressway.

Older travel guides quote about 100 to 110 km by road via Bavla. After the expressway opened, some reports say the Ahmedabad–Dholera distance fell to about 83 km. The expressway itself is 109 km long, but that figure includes a stretch beyond Dholera that runs on to Adhelai near Bhavnagar. Going by the published lengths of the construction packages, the section from Sarkhej to the Dholera Smart City is about 71 km (22.0, 26.5 and 22.5 km), and the remaining 38 km continues towards Adhelai.

A fair summary is this: about 70 to 80 km on the expressway to reach the SIR boundary, and about 80 to 100 km door to door, depending on your start and finish. Use the figure that matches your own journey and confirm it on a map app before you leave.

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway: What It Is Today

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is a four-lane, access-controlled corridor that can be expanded to eight lanes. NHAI built it as part of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor. It starts at the Sardar Patel Ring Road near Sarkhej, passes through the Dholera Special Investment Region and ends at Adhelai in Bhavnagar district. It opened for public testing earlier in 2026 and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 31 March 2026.

Three features matter to travellers:

  • Limited entry and exit points. Because it is access controlled, you join and leave at interchanges rather than at village junctions.
  • Interchanges. Reports say the interchanges at Pipli, which links to the Dholera International Airport, and at Vataman have been completed. An interchange giving direct access to the Dholera Activation Area was still being finished in late 2025, so check which exits are open before you travel.
  • Room to grow. The median is wide enough for expansion up to eight lanes.

Travel Time: Expressway vs the Old Route

The two routes are very different in time.

  • Old route via Bavla and Dhandhuka: about 2 to 2.5 hours in most travel guides, and up to 3 hours in some, depending on traffic.
  • Expressway: officials and news reports put the corridor time at about 40 to 45 minutes, while some guides say 45 to 50 minutes.

Those figures describe the corridor itself. Your real trip also includes city traffic, the ring road, the exit and the last stretch to your site. Treat 45 minutes as the best case and an hour as a sensible planning figure, and add more if you are leaving or returning at peak hours.

For the return journey, the evening rush into Ahmedabad is the main risk. If you have a fixed arrival time in the city, leave Dholera earlier than the map suggests.

The Old Route via Bavla and Dhandhuka: Is It Still Useful?

The traditional road runs from Ahmedabad through Sarkhej, Bavla, Dhandhuka and Fedara to Dholera. Bavla is the usual stop for fuel and food. Traffic thins out after Dhandhuka and the roads become flatter and straighter.

This route is still worth knowing about in three situations:

  • Your destination is a village on the Dhandhuka side.
  • Your navigation app routes you off the expressway for a particular exit.
  • You want a backup if there is a problem on the expressway.

If you are looking at land in villages outside the SIR boundary, such as Akru, Kasindra or Valinda, remember that the final approach may use local roads even if you take the expressway for most of the trip. Our comparison of residential plots outside the Dholera SIR boundary explains how these locations differ from land inside the SIR. Always ask for the exact directions to your specific plot or site.

Which Route for Which Destination

The best route depends on where you are going:

  • Dholera Activation Area and the ABCD building: use the expressway and then the SIR’s planned grid roads. Ask which exit is open and which is closest to your site.
  • Dholera International Airport side: reports point to the Pipli interchange as the link. The airport is near Navagam, about 20 km from the Dholera SIR.
  • Villages outside the SIR: use the expressway for the longer part of the journey, then local roads, or take the old route through Bavla and Dhandhuka.
  • Group site visits: share a pin location and a landmark with everyone, because phones lose signal in places and new roads can appear incorrectly on older maps.

Dholera Airport: Distance and Status

Many visitors ask about the airport because it affects the travel plan. The Dholera International Airport is near Navagam, about 20 km from the Dholera SIR, and the expressway is the main road link to it.

In the reports we reviewed, the airport project was around 80 percent complete, with operations targeted for September or October 2026. A later update mentioned a successful trial landing. We have not verified a confirmed start of commercial flights, so check official announcements before you plan any trip around air travel. For now, plan your Dholera visit by road from Ahmedabad.

Tolls, FASTag and Practical Tips

A little preparation makes the trip smoother.

  • Tolls: toll plazas have been reported on the corridor, and FASTag is mandatory on national highways. Toll rates and arrangements have been reported as still being finalised, so check the current position with NHAI or your navigation app before you travel. We do not quote a toll figure here.
  • Fuel and food: fill up and eat in Ahmedabad or at Bavla if you take the old road. Do not assume there will be services at every point along an access-controlled road.
  • Timing: start early. A morning start gives you daylight to see the site and a calmer drive back.
  • Navigation: download offline maps. New interchanges may not appear correctly on old map versions, so double-check exits against signboards.
  • Carry the basics: water, a phone charger, your ID and a copy of the site address.
  • First visit: avoid driving back after dark if you have not been to the area before.

Public Transport, Rail and Metro

A private car or cab is the practical way to reach Dholera today. Travel guides say state buses have run to Bavla and Dhandhuka, with limited direct services to Dholera, so check current GSRTC timetables if you plan to use them.

A rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Dholera has been reported as approved, and an MRTS link has been discussed, but neither is operating. Do not plan a visit around them. Check official announcements for progress.

What the Shorter Travel Time Means for Plot Buyers

The faster road changes how people evaluate Dholera, but it should not replace careful checking.

  • A day trip is realistic. Many buyers can now leave Ahmedabad in the morning, see a site and return the same day.
  • Compare time, not only distance. Two locations at similar distances can have different travel times depending on which exit and which local roads you use.
  • Separate what is operating from what is planned. The expressway is open. The airport and rail link are still milestones to confirm, so ask any developer to label each as operational, under construction or proposed.
  • Connectivity is one factor among several. Good access does not tell you whether a plot has clear title, the right land use or a valid layout. Our guide to DSIRDA, TP schemes and NA conversion explains the terms you should understand before you decide.
